Established in January 2021, the Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy was founded to meet the growing demand for specialized gastrointestinal care and endoscopic services for patients in Hai Phong and the northeastern coastal region of Vietnam. The Department aims to provide optimal treatment outcomes, minimize the risk of complications, and shorten treatment and recovery times for patients.

Medical Team

The Department brings together a team of leading specialists in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy from major healthcare institutions, including Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi Medical University, Vinmec Healthcare System, and Viet Tiep Hospital. The Department consists of 15 physicians and 30 nurses, many of whom have extensive experience in the field of gastroenterology. The nursing team is professionally trained, highly responsible, and dedicated to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.

Located on the 4th Floor of Hai Phong International General Hospital, the Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy occupies nearly 3,000 m² and is divided into two dedicated areas: a 2,000 m² inpatient treatment unit with more than 50 beds for patients with gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic diseases, and a 700 m² endoscopy center.

The Department is comprehensively equipped with some of the most advanced medical technologies available today, including seven Olympus CV-170 and CV-190 endoscopy systems (Japan) featuring Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) technology. These systems support high-magnification endoscopy and chromoendoscopy, enabling the early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers and precancerous lesions.

Additional advanced equipment includes the Olympus GF-UCT180 Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) system integrated with the CV-190 platform, a 4D color ultrasound system, side-viewing endoscopes for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and radiofrequency ablation equipment for the treatment of liver cancer. These technologies are further supported by the Hospital’s state-of-the-art diagnostic systems, including a 128-slice CT scanner, a 3.0 Tesla MRI system, and advanced angiography equipment.

The Endoscopy Center is designed as a separate, dedicated area and strictly complies with disinfection and sterilization protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the highest level of safety for both patients and healthcare professionals.

The Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy at Hai Phong International General Hospital provides consultation, examination, diagnosis, and treatment for a comprehensive range of gastrointestinal diseases, including:

– Esophageal disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), eosinophilic esophagitis, infectious esophagitis, and esophageal diseases associated with immunodeficiency conditions.
– Gastric disorders, including gastric emptying disorders, functional dyspepsia, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastritis, and peptic ulcer disease.
– Intestinal diseases, including gastrointestinal motility disorders, infectious and toxin-related diarrhea, viral enteritis, small intestinal absorption and digestive disorders, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colonic diverticular disease, and colorectal polyps.
– Anorectal disorders, including hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, anal fissures, anorectal abscesses, and solitary rectal ulcer syndrome.
– Pancreatic diseases, including pancreatitis and pancreatic cysts.
– Hepatobiliary diseases, including gallstones, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hepatic and biliary cysts, sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, chronic hepatitis B and C, autoimmune hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, primary biliary cholangitis, and metabolic liver diseases.
– Other conditions, including parasitic infections, liver fluke disease, and liver cancer management using radiofrequency ablation, transarterial embolization, and chemotherapy.

Endoscopy Services

– Diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy, including tissue biopsy for histopathological examination and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) testing.
– Therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including esophageal and gastrointestinal tract dilation, esophageal stent placement, polypectomy, and endoscopic hemostasis using techniques such as endoscopic band ligation for esophageal varices, sclerotherapy, argon plasma coagulation (APC), hemoclip placement, and Hemospray.
– Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for the treatment of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers.
– Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic disorders.
– Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) for the diagnosis and treatment of selected gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic diseases.
